For someone new to mobile games, Capybara Crossing is easier to learn. Nothing moves your capybara unless you hop, one tap is one step, and the rules fit in a sentence. Sonic Dash is faster and has more to learn: Sonic runs forward on his own across three lanes, and the game layers rings, upgrades and a big cast on top. It’s the better pick once you want speed and long-term goals. The beginner trap in Capybara Crossing is the eagle. In Sonic Dash, it’s the pace and the store.

Which game is easier to control? #
Capybara Crossing moves on a grid. A tap hops forward one lane and a swipe hops in that direction. If you don’t touch the screen, your capybara stays put, so a beginner can stop, look and think. The world is four kinds of lane: grass, road, river and railway.
Sonic Dash never stops. Sonic runs forward automatically and you react: swipe left or right to change lanes, swipe up to jump, swipe down to roll. Every input has to be right on time, because the next obstacle is already coming.
For a first game, one tap for one step is simpler to understand than reacting at speed. That’s the main reason Capybara Crossing suits beginners better.
Who sets the pace? #
In Capybara Crossing you mostly set the pace, with one catch: stand still for five seconds and a warning flashes, and at eight seconds an eagle carries your capybara off. That rule stops you waiting forever. Traffic also speeds up as your score climbs, up to about two and a half times its starting speed around 75 points.
In Sonic Dash the game sets the pace, and it gets faster the longer you survive. Beginners often find the first minute fine and the third minute overwhelming.
How does progression work in each game? #
Capybara Crossing has one currency, coins, collected one at a time during runs, plus a daily gift. You spend them on capybaras priced from 100 to 3,500 coins, and many of those capybaras have perks such as coin magnets, smaller hitboxes or a one-hit shield. There’s no store, so the only way forward is playing. Our guide to every Capybara Crossing character lists them all.
Sonic Dash has rings, which you collect while running, and red star rings, a rarer currency used for characters and upgrades. Both can be bought with real money. Characters include Sonic’s friends and, through events, guests from other series such as Angry Birds, Sanrio and Pac-Man. There’s more to chase, and more reasons to be nudged toward the store.
Ads and spending #
Capybara Crossing shows a banner at the top of the screen and an occasional ad after game over, never during your first three games of a session and never twice within two minutes. Reward videos are optional: watch one for 50 coins or a revive. There are no in-app purchases.
Sonic Dash is free with ads, and it sells rings and red star rings. If ads are a dealbreaker and you subscribe to Apple Arcade, Sonic Dash+ is an Arcade version with no ads and no in-app purchases.
Which should a beginner pick? #
- Brand-new to games, or setting up a game for a child: start with Capybara Crossing. The controls are one step per tap, nothing’s for sale, and it works offline.
- A Sonic fan who wants speed: Sonic Dash. Expect a steeper first hour, and consider switching off in-app purchases if a child is playing.
- Hates ads and already has Apple Arcade: Sonic Dash+.
Once you’ve played both, there’s no reason to choose. They scratch different itches: Capybara Crossing is a careful puzzle under time pressure, and Sonic Dash is a reflex test.
Beginner tips for each game #
Capybara Crossing #
- Look two lanes ahead, not at your capybara.
- Cross railways right after a train passes, never while the lights flash.
- Keep moving. A sideways hop is better than standing still when the eagle warning appears.

Sonic Dash #
- Stay in the middle lane when you can, so you have an escape route on both sides.
- Watch the obstacles coming, not Sonic.
- Don’t chase every ring in the early going. Surviving longer earns more.

Frequently asked questions #
Is Sonic Dash good for beginners? #
It’s playable for beginners but not gentle. Sonic runs automatically, so every swipe has to be on time, and the speed keeps rising. Most new players do better starting with a slower game and coming back to Sonic Dash once reacting at speed feels natural.
Is Capybara Crossing free? #
Yes, completely. Every capybara is earned by playing, and there are no in-app purchases. Ads support it: a top banner, an occasional ad after game over, and reward videos you can choose to watch.
Is there a version of Sonic Dash without ads? #
Yes. Sonic Dash+ on Apple Arcade has no ads and no in-app purchases, and it’s included with an Apple Arcade subscription.
Which game is better for kids? #
For young players, Capybara Crossing is the simpler choice: one step per tap, no store, no account, and no chat. Sonic Dash suits kids who already love Sonic and can handle fast reactions, ideally with purchases switched off in the device settings.
